Wie in dieser Zeitperiode der spanischen Malerei üblich, zeigt das Stillleben auch hier einen strengen symmetrischen Aufbau. Dabei werden Blumen, Früchte, eine prächtige Vase und Prunkschalen gleichermaßen ins Bild gebracht, auf einer grauen Steinplatte streng nebeneinandergestellt. Beinahe ornamental wirkt die Anordnung – auch der Blüten und Früchte. Jede Zufälligkeit wird vermieden, was sich auch darin ausdrückt, dass die beiden herabgefallenen Tulpen seitlich der Vase nahezu spiegelgleich-symmetrisch angeordnet liegen. Die Farbigkeit zeigt sich gedeckt und zurückhaltend. Umso prächtiger die Gefäße mit ihren Festons, umso auffallender auch die hellfarbigen Blüten im Gesteck, wie Lilien oder Schneeballblumen. Auch der große libellenartige Schmetterling wirkt eher ornamental als naturalistisch. Ein weiteres, vom Maler bekannt gewordenes Stillleben, mit Prunkschalen und Goldgefäßen auf einem Tischtuch, zeigt sich in ebenderselben Komposition entwickelt.

Der Maler, der sich auch religiöser Themen und dem Porträt annahm, ist jedoch vor allem für seine Stillleben bekannt. Er wirkte in Toledo und Madrid zwischen 1612 und 1626. Sein Stil verrät auch eine Ausbildung oder Beeinflussung durch Holland bzw. die spanischen Niederlande. Nach 1631, mit dem Ableben des ebenfalls mit Stillleben bekannt gewordenen Juan van der Haman y León, widmete auch er sich ganz diesem Sujet. Daneben schuf er auch Wandbilder in Kirchen, wie etwa in Alcaudete. A.R.

As is typical for Spanish painting of the time, the still life on offer for sale in this lot also shows a strictly symmetrical composition. The colouration is muted and restrained, while the vessels with their festoons are all the more magnificent. The large dragonfly-like butterfly appears rather ornamental than naturalistic. Another still life known by the artist depicts magnificent bowls and gold vessels, displayed on a tablecloth and shows the same composition.
