Wie im Matthäusevangelium (Mt. 2) überliefert wurde, hatte König Herodes die Tötung aller männlichen Kleinkinder in Bethlehem angeordnet, um den neugeborenen König der Juden, Jesus von Nazaret, zu beseitigen. Die Szene ist eingebettet in eine Architekturstaffage mit rückwärtigem sich öffnendem Gewässer, sodass das Geschehen nach Neapel, zum Entstehungsort des Bildes, transferiert zu sein scheint. Das vorliegende Gemälde kann mit zwei Gemälden in der Galleria Corsini verglichen werden und auch mit einem Bild ähnlicher Maße, welches von Nicola Spinosa 1984 publiziert wurde, signiert und 1649 datiert ist. Auch das vorliegende Bild wird in den Jahren 1648 - 1652 entstanden sein. Rest.
