Wilhelm Camphausen war einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der Schlachtenmalerei aus der Düsseldorfer Schule, welche im 19. Jahrhundert ihren Höhepunkt erlebte. Zu seinen bedeutendsten Aufträgen zählte die Ausgestaltung der Ruhmeshalle des Berliner Zeughauses, die er im Jahre 1896 vollendete. Zu seinen Spezialitäten zählten die Pferde, welche im Zuge zeitgenössischer und historisierender militärischer Gemälde unablässlich waren und einen Großteil seines Schaffens ausmachten.
