Seinen Unterricht erhielt Pittoni zunächst bei seinem Onkel Francesco Pittoni (aktiv um 1687 - um 1718), später bei Antonio Balestra (1666-1740), wurde aber auch von Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734), Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682-1754) und Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770) beeinflusst, den er zuletzt als Präsident der Venezianischen Akademie abgelöst hat. So gilt Pittoni als einer der gefragtesten Maler und Zeichner des Spätbarock und Rokoko.

Formal erinnert das Gemälde an eine „Jakob mit Rahel am Brunnen“-Szene (Fondazione Zeri 67009), welche ebenfalls Pittoni zugeschrieben wird und ähnliche Bildmaße aufweist. Der Bischof mit seinem Bischofsstab und zu seinen Füßen stehender Mitra, auf Lehrbücher gestützt, blickt diagonal in die rechte obere Bildecke, wo das hell erleuchtete Antlitz des Erzengels zu sehen ist, der in seiner linken Hand eine Waage hält, welche auf Wolken ruht.
