Der Künstler gilt neben Stefan Luchian (1868-1916) und Ioan Andreescu (1850-1882) als einer der Mitbegründer der modernen rumänischen Malerei. Er war Schüler von Anton Chladek (1794-1882) und widmete sich zunächst der Ausmalung von Kirchen und Klöstern.
