Das Bildmotiv geht auf ein Gemälde von Guido Reni (1575 – 1642) zurück, das sich im Musée des Beaux-arts in Tours befindet. Dort allerdings ist die Gestalt der Europa, die sich an den Körper eines Stieres mit blumenbekränztem Kopf anlehnt, in Nahsicht wiedergegeben, ohne die in weiteren Version weiterführende Meeresoberfläche. Eine weitere Ausführung von Reni befindet sich in Ottawa, National Gallery of Canada. Erst eine dritte Version (Sammlung Denis Mahon, London), ebenfalls von Reni, zeigt bereits rechts und im Vordergrund Erweiterungen der Meerlandschaft bis zum Horizont mit einer Figurengruppe am rechten Bildrand. Giovanni Andrea Sirani (1610-1670), Vater der Elisabetta, widmete sich dem Thema ebenfalls und schuf ein Gemälde, in dem Europa mit dem Stier im Zentrum einer beiderseits weitergeführten Meereswellenwiedergabe steht (Pinacoteca Capitolina, Rom). Das hier vorliegende Gemälde, durch Expertise der Malerin zugwiesen, ist in wesentlich kleinerem Format angelegt, um kleine Bilddetails jedoch erweitert, wie etwa die auf der hinteren Meeresoberfläche erkennbaren Segelschiffe sowie eine Landzunge rechts mit Figurenstaffage. Ebenfalls beibehalten ist der in der rechten oberen Ecke wiedergegebene Armorknabe mit Pfeil und Bogen, der auf Europa zielt. Das Gemälde in feiner Pinseltechnik. (1180693) (5) (11)

The image motif is based on a painting by Guido Reni (1575 - 1642) held at the Musée des beaux-arts in Tours.
