Als Keith Haring mit nur 31 Jahren 1990 verstarb, war er bereits ein international bekannter und kommerziell erfolgreicher Künstler. Wie kaum ein anderer vor ihm und zu seinen Lebzeiten verstand Haring es, den Geist seiner Zeit kritisch einzufangen und vorbei am konventionellen Kunstbetrieb zu etablieren. Der zunächst als Werbegrafiker ausgebildete Haring studierte nach Abbruch seiner Ausbildung in Pittsburgh an der School for Visual Arts in New York und ließ sich durch das in den 1960er Jahren entstandene Graffiti inspirieren. In fast unendlichen Kombinationen gelingt es ihm, ohne Vorzeichnung seine Werke mit der charakteristischen geschlossenen Linien auf unterschiedlichste Bildträger zu bringen. Seine Botschaften sind dabei so direkt wie eindrücklich.

When Keith Haring died in 1990 aged only 31, he was already an internationally acclaimed and commercially successful artist. Like no other artist before or during his lifetime, he knew how to critically capture the zeitgeist and established himself alongside the conventional art scene. He initially trained as a commercial graphic designer and, after abandoning his training in Pittsburgh, he enrolled at the School for Visual Arts in New York where he took inspiration from the rising graffiti art scene of the 1960s.
Without the use of any preliminary sketches, Haring is able to create his characteristic works with continuous lines in almost infinite combinations and in a wide range of visual media. His messages are as direct as they are convincing.
