PORTRAIT OF AN OLD WIDOW
Oil on poplar panel.
52 x 40.5 cm.
Accompanied by an expert's report from Dr Alessandro Nesi.
The rejection of idealisation in the present lot along with the moving realism of the widow's physiognomy, the skilful light effects on her skin and the well-conceived compositional balance are all typical elements of di Tito's style and painterly ductus. This is borne out by a comparison with other portraits by the artist such as Potrait of Francesca Vivorati (private collection in Prato), Portrait of a Widow at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Chambéry and the noble woman depicted in Family Portrait at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin.
This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
