Dargestellt ist wohl die berühmte Schauspielerin Sarah Siddons (1755 – 1831), verkleidet als Hirtenjunge Ganymed.
Als Vorbild diente Joseph Wright of Derby die Ölskizze der Romanfigur „Hirtenjunge Edwin“ (ca. 1778) von Thomas Haden, welche sich in der Sammlung des National Trust in Smallhythe Place in Kent befindet.
Unser Gemälde entspricht farblich sowie auch im Größenverhältnis dem weiblichen Gegenstück „Die Irre Marie“ (Derby Art Gallery), gemalt von Joseph Wright of Derby, 1781.
Dieser Bildtypus nach dem Roman war in der Zeit der Romantik in England als Grafik sehr beliebt.
