Es handelt sich hier um die Kopien zweier bekannter, vom Format her etwas kleinerer Gemälde en pendant von Michael Sweerts (1618-1664), die im Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam zu sehen sind. Beide sind Meisterwerke von Sweerts und haben eindeutig allegorischen Charakter, da hier die Tugend des Fleißes (die arbeitenden Künstler) der Habsucht (die Kartenspieler vor einer Schenke) gegenübergestellt wird. The present pair of paintings are copies of two pendant paintings of slightly smaller format by Michael Sweerts held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The originals are masterworks by Sweerts and are clearly of allegorical character as the virtue of diligence, embodied in the working artists, is contrasted with the vice of greed, personified by the card players in a tavern.
