(1061391) (21)

THE PENITENT MARY MAGDALENE

Oil on canvas.
90 x 75 cm.

Accompanied by an expert's report by Professor Ugo Ruggeri.

Professor Ruggeri is an expert on this painter and explains in his report that this depiction of the Penitent Mary Magdalene occupies an important place within Liberi's oeuvre. Comparisons with other late works by Liberi such as the Madonna figure in the Gloria di San'Antonio fresco in the sacristy of the Basilica di Sant'Antonio, Padua clearly confirm Liberi's authorship. Further good examples for comparison are the Sant'Elena che trova la vera croce in the Santa Croce Church in Cessalto (Venice), Ritrovamento di Mosè (formerly Philip Pouncey collection, London; see also U. Ruggeri, Pietro e Marco Liberi: Pittori nella Venezia del Seicento, Rimini 1996, P100,159) and Tarquinius and Lucretia (private collection; Id. P90, pp. 153, 155). The offered lot can therefore also be dated to a specific chronological period, namely around the middle of the 1660s, probably the happiest period of Pietro Liberi's creative work.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
