Der Teller gemuldet und mit breiter Fahne, diese dekoriert mit Satyrn und Ignudi sowie Amoretten zwischen Rollwerk. Im Spiegel Darstellung der Sofonisba, die Scipio vorgeführt wird. Die Bemalung in Blau, Schwarz, Ocker, Gelb und Grün vor cremeweißem Fond. Glasurabrieb am Rand, Chips an der Lippe, bodenseitig Ascheanflugsp.
Anmerkung:
Sofonisba war die Tochter des karthagischen Feldherrn Hasdrubal und wurde mit dem westnumidischen König Syphax vermählt, der sich mit Karthago gegen Rom verbündet hatte. Als Syphax den Krieg gegen die Römer verlor, fiel Sofonisba ihrem vormals Verlobten Massinissa in die Hände, der sie sofort zur Frau nahm, um sie den Römern zu entziehen. Doch der Römer Scipio forderte ihre Auslieferung, woraufhin sie einen von ihrem Gemahl gereichten Giftbecher trank. Das Thema erfreute sich in der Renaissance großer Popularität und wurde unter anderem von Giovanni Boccaccio (1313 - 1375) und Francesco Petrarca (1304 - 1374) bearbeitet. (10414617) (12)
