Im oberen Zentrum des Bildes die trauernde Maria, umgeben von dem in ein Tuch weinenden Johannes Evangelist sowie den beiden Marien und Josef von Arimathäa. In der unteren Bildmitte in leichter Vergrößerung der tote Christus in der typischen Körperhaltung der Pietà. Der Stil stark beeinflusst von der flämischen Malerei der Zeit in betont kräftig wiedergegebenen Farben. Der Dolch im Zentrum des Bildes, der das Herz Mariens trifft, ist als Symbol des Schmerzes zu verstehen und wohl für den Bildtitel als Andachtsbild „Schmerzhaften Maria“ bestimmend. (1021283) (11)

The style is strongly influenced by Flemish painting of the time with marked vibrant colours. The dagger in the centre of the image hitting Mary‘s heart is to be understood as a symbol of pain and probably determines the title as a devotional picture of the “Mary of the Sorrows“.
