Leonardo Coccorante,
1680 Naples - ca. 1750

Pair of paintings
COASTAL LANDSCAPE WITH RUINS AND FIGURES

Oil on canvas.
71 x 154 cm.
Framed.

Although Leonardo Coccorante was one of the most important capriccio and veduta painters of the 18th century Neapolitan art scene, little is known of his life. There are only a few dated and recorded works by him. The two present paintings depict phantasy landscapes with large, architectonically complex ruins. They are set by the sea, which is at first calm in one of the paintings and then stormy in the other. Only a few ships and slender figures and wispy trees, bent by the wind, can be seen in the background so that the impact of the impressive architecture is heightened. The painting style of both paintings is vaguely reminiscent of Salvator Rosa and Viviano Codazzi, or more tangibly of Gennaro Greco, also known as Mascacotta, and Angelo Maria Costa, the teacher of Leonardo Coccorante. However, the lyrical, almost romantic echoes, the light and colours of the sunset surrounding both paintings, are the artist’s trademarks. There are a few signed works by Coccorante which can be compared with the present two paintings: both „Vedute costiere con Rovine“ (Lowe Art Gallery, Coral Gables), „Porto con rovine“ (Caserta Palace) and "Marina" (Palazzo Reale, Naples).
