Das Gemälde zeigt eine ruhig aufgefasste Szenerie mit einer zwischen Rindern, Schafen und Ziegen am Boden sitzenden, jungen Hirtin mit ihrem Kleinkind im Gespräch mit einem weiteren an einen Esel gelehnten Hirten. Links senkt sich das Gelände ab zu einem Flusslauf mit Steinbrücke, die zu einer im mittleren Hintergrund erhöht stehenden Burg führt. Beleuchtung von links oben mit einem von nur wenigen Wolken überzogenen Mittagshimmel. Die Wiedergabe der unterschiedlichen Lichtstimmungen zwischen heller beleuchteten Hauptelementen des Bildes und verschattetem Hintergrund ist meisterlich gelöst.
Provenienz:
Ehemals Sammlung der Fürsten von Liechtenstein. 1820 von Johann I. von Liechtenstein (1760 - 1836) erworben.

Signed and dated “JH Roos/ fecit/ 1658” lower left.
The painting shows a calmly constructed scene. The rendering of the different light atmospheres between brightly illuminated main elements of the painting and the shadowed background are resolved with mastery.
Provenance:
Formerly collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Purchased in 1820 by Johann I. von Liechtenstein (1760 – 1836).
