SAINT SEBASTIAN
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Ca. 95 x 135 cm.
The present depiction of Saint Sebastian, one of the most commonly encountered characters in 17th century Italian art has exceptional, dramatic expressiveness. This painting clearly belongs to the “period of Tenebrism” (ital. tenebroso = murky), a movement in Venetian painting during the second half of the 17th century, whose main protagonists were Antonio Zanchi, Johann Carl Loth and most notably Giovanni Battista Langetti.
