THE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT JANUARIUS (MARTIRIO DI SAN GENNARO)
Oil on canvas.
87 x 130 cm.
The present work shows Solimena’s best artistic skills: the colours are vibrant, the dramatic composition is full of suspense and shows his talent for breaking down the image content dynamically and balanced at the same time, and despite the large number of figures to give each their own, differing expression. The present painting probably dates to period of 1725 – 1730.
