Kannelierte Säulen sind Teile eines geräumigen Architekturensembles, das Bellucci als Bühne diente für die Darstellung einer mehrpersonigen biblischen Geschichte. Josef war nach Ägypten verkauft worden und gelangte an den Hof des Potifar, dessen Soldaten den noch jungen Josef im Begriff sind abzuführen. Was war geschehen? Die Frau des Potifar und ihre Mägde waren von Josefs Schönheit ergriffen und so suchte Potifars Gemahlin Josef zum Ehebruch zu bringen, was er ausschlug, sodass sie ihn der unsittlichen Annäherung beschuldigt hatte. Die Geschichte ist im Buch Genesis (Gen 39,1-20), aber auch im Islam und im Judentum überliefert.
Antonio Bellucci, der von Succi genannt wird, war ein italienischer Barockmaler, studierte in Venedig unter Andrea Celesti (1637-1712), Pietro Liberi (1614-1687) und Antonio Zanchi (1631-1722). Wie andere Vertreter der venezianischen Malerei (Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734), Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770)) nahm er Malaufträge in Norditalien an, wo er prächtige Fresken für die Paläste der lokalen Gönner schuf. Zeitweise lebt er auch am Hofe des Kurfürsten Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz (1658-1716), für dessen Gemäldegalerie ereinige Bilder schuf.
