Die dramatischen Wasserfälle von Tivoli waren schon in der Antike berühmt und Goethe nannte es eines der „ersten Naturschauspiele“. Zahlreiche Künstler des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts bereisten die Gegend und so nimmt es nicht Wunder, dass auch Arthur John Strutt, der ja auch zu Fuß Kalabrien und Sizilien erkundete – Tivoli besuchte und mehrere Ansichten fertigte, die teilweise – wie auch bei dem hier angebotenen Gemälde der Fall – in mehreren Versionen auf uns gekommen sind.
