Die Szene bezieht sich auf eine Stelle, die unter anderem im Markusevangelium Erwähnung findet (Mk, 14,66-72): „Und Petrus war unten im Hof. Da kam eine von den Mägden des Hohepriesters; und als sie Petrus sah, wie er sich wärmte, schaute sie ihn an und sprach: Und du warst auch mit dem Jesus von Nazareth. Er leugnete aber und sprach: Ich weiß nicht und verstehe nicht, was du sagst. Und er ging hinaus in den Vorhof, und der Hahn krähte. Und die Magd sah ihn und fing abermals an, denen zu sagen, die dabeistanden: Dieser ist einer von denen. Und er leugnete abermals.
Und nach einer kleinen Weile sprachen die, die dabeistanden, abermals zu Petrus: Wahrhaftig, du bist einer von denen; denn du bist auch ein Galiläer. Er aber fing an, sie zu verfluchen und zu schwören: Ich kenne den Menschen nicht, von dem ihr redet. Und alsbald krähte der Hahn zum zweiten Mal. Da gedachte Petrus an das Wort, das Jesus zu ihm gesagt hatte: Ehe der Hahn zweimal kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen. Und er fing an zu weinen.“ Eindrücklich fing Mattia Preti diese Szene im Geschmack des Chiaroscuro-Caravaggismus seiner Zeit ein und lässt die Hauptfiguren im Schlaglicht gleißend hell aus dem Dunkel des Grundes heraustreten. Spinosa stellt in seinem Gutachten den guten Erhaltungszustand des Gemäldes heraus und datiert es auf um 1650, als Preti in Rom weilte.
Der in Kalabrien geborene und auf Malta verstorbene Maler hatte nach Auskunft seiner Zeitgenossen ein äußerst bewegtes Leben. Er war nicht allein Maler, sondern auch Ordensritter der Malteser und wurde aufgrund des Ruhmes seiner Familie „Il Cavalier Calabrese“ genannt. In Rom erhielt er Aufträge von Papst Urban VIII sowie von Kardinal Rospigliosi. Sein Werk zeigt die Schule des Guercino (1591-1666), Giovanni Lanfranco (1582-1647) und Domenico Zampieri (1581-1641) sowie den starken Einfluss der tenebristischen Malerei der Caravaggisten. Werke seiner Hand finden sich in den bedeutendsten öffentlichen Sammlungen und Museen wie etwa im Museum of Fine Arts, Houston im Nationalmuseum Warschau, im Prado, Madrid, in der Pinacoteca di Brera, Mailand und in der Galleria dell‘Accademia, Venedig. Sein Selbstbildnis befindet sich in den Uffizien in Florenz.
