(1082436) (21)
Giandomenico Tiepolo,
1727 Venice - 1804
A pair of paintings
PYTHAGORAS
and
DEMOSTHENES
Oil on canvas.
Both ca. 60 x 50 cm.
Accompanied by an expert’s report by Professor G. Knox.
Depictions of heads of old men in Oriental dress showing imaginative portraits of philosophers form a well-known part Tiepolo’s oeuvre. Giambattista pioneered this type of depiction and defined their fundamental features in his late works, more specifically with his initial series of paintings dated ca. 1755. The high quality and stylistic similarities of the offered paintings are entirely in keeping with other character studies attributed by specialists to Domenico Tiepolo.
The two figures can be identified as Pythagoras and Demosthenes due to inscriptions present on other known versions of these portraits. It can also be assumed that the present paintings were originally part of an extensive cycle of philosopher portraits.
