Um 1998 begann Thomas Ruff sich sowohl für Aktfotografie als auch für abstrakte Bilder mit grober Pixelstruktur zu interessieren, woraufhin die Serie „nudes“ entstand. Bei seinen Internetrecherchen stieß er auf in sogenannten „Thumbnail Galleries“ frei verfügbare pornografische Bilder, die er durch Bewegungsunschärfen, Weichzeichner und Farbwechsel veränderte. Seine Vorlagen wählte der Künstler nach kompositorischen Gesichtspunkten wie Bildaufbau, Lichtführung, Farbigkeit oder Körperinszenierung aus. (1391596) (1) (10)
