Das Gemälde mag auch als Allegorie verstanden werden. Gezeigt ist ein bärtiger Mann mittleren Alters, mit nur halb bekleidetem Oberkörper, der eine Weinflasche hochhält und lächelnd dem Bildbetrachter entgegenblickt. Das stark in tenebrosem Farbcharakter geschaffene Bild verrät die Schulung des Malers in Rom, aber auch seinen Kontakt dort mit dem Rembrandt-Schüler Willem Drost, mit dem er zusammen nach Venedig ging.
