Das vorliegende Werk ist eine sehr gute Kopie des gleichnamigen Bildes von Marcantonio Franceschini, der es im Auftrag von Fürst Franz Johann Adam Andreas Lichtenstein für dessen Gartenpalast in Rossau bei Wien malte. Das Gemälde von Franceschini ist eines von einer Vielzahl mythologischer Darstellungen, die er zwischen 1690 und 1710 malte. Es gehört zu einer Gruppe von vierzehn Bildern, die alle Diana gewidmet und in einem eigenen Dianazimmer in Rossau ausge-stellt wurden. Es handelt sich hier um ein hervor-ragendes Beispiel für das Mäzenatentum in der europäischen Kunst des 17. Und 18. Jahrhunderts. Dank des regen Briefwechsels zwischen dem Fürsten von Lichtenstein und Franceschini ist diese Zeitspanne sehr gut dokumentiert. (992532)
