Der weit durch Europa gereiste Pillement wandte sich ab den 1780er Jahren der Marinemalerei zu. Stilistisch stehen die Gemälde dieses Themenkreises oftmals den Arbeiten Vernets nahe (was zu der später angebrachten Signatur am rechten Bildrand geführt haben). Doch die vor allem in den Figuren zu beobachtende verkürzte Ausführung und die leichte Vereinfachung in der Komposition sprechen dafür, dass es sich um ein Gemälde handelt, das der Künstler während seines zweiten Aufenthalts in den 80er Jahren in Portugal gemalt hatte. Vergleichbare Werke, die sich auf 1781 und 1782 datieren lassen, befinden sich in Privatsammlungen, (Vgl. Jean Pillement and Landscape Painting in 18th century Portugal, Lissabon, 1997, Nr. 16-18).

The quite often very similar landscape scenes to paintings by Vernet may have led to the signature added later on the right edge of the painting.
