Expertise:
Dem Gemälde ist ein gutachterliches Schreiben von Claudio Strinati, Rom, September 2012 beigegeben. Hier führt der Autor aus, dass späte Cinquecento-Künstler der lombardischen Schule in ähnlicher Weise die archaische, einfache Darstellung des Fruchtstillebens entwickelt hatten, wie dies das Werk von Fede Galizia zeigt. Ferner wird in dieser gutachterlichen Stellungnahme erwähnt, dass die Komposition des vorliegenden Bildes sich sehr eng an eine Titelgrafik im Holzschnitt des Venezianers Antonio Gardano (1509 - 1569) anlehnt, (Motetti del Frutto), eine Anthologie musikalischer Thematik mit Stilleben und mit dieser in Zusammenhang gebracht wird, publiziert 1538. Das vorliegende Gemälde wird in dem Schreiben als ein Werk von höchster Qualität genannt und eindeutig in Zusammenhang mit Caravaggio und den innovativen römischen Künstlern in der alsbaldigen Nachfolge genannt. Das Werk ist erstmals in einer Auktion 1992 wiederentdeckt worden und wurde schon bald mit dem "Stilleben mit Korb und Früchten" Caravaggios in der Sammlung von Kardinal Antonio Barberini in Zusammenhang gebracht. Auch in diesem Schreiben werden die frühen Stillebenmaler wie Tommaso Salini, Giovanni Battista Crescenzi sowie Agostino Verrocchi genannt, die allgemein als Urheber der frühesten römischen und damit italienischen Stillebenmalerei gelten.

The Italian still life master who has hitherto not been unambiguously named, was labelled after the famous painting in the American Collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford.

Expert's report:
An advisory opinion by Claudio Strinati is enclosed. The artwork was first re-discovered in an auction in 1992 and soon after linked with Caravaggio's painting "Still life with Fruit” from the collection of Cardinal Antonio Barberini.

The large-scale painting is published, discussed and illustrated in: Maurizio Marini, "Ut natura picture” - natura come pittura. Antologia di nature morte dal XVI al XVIII secolo, pp. 24 - 29, with three full page colour illustrations and cover picture.
The most important article on this work was written by Mina Gregori, published in "Notizie su Agostino Verrocchi e un'ipotesi per Giovanni Battista Crescenzi”, in: "Paragone”, 1973, no. 275, pp. 44 – 45, plate 27 and colour plate II ("Pittore della natura morte di Hartford - G. B. Crescenzi).
