Pair of Maiolica albarelli
Height: 31 cm.
Diameter: 18.5 cm.
Cattelli, circa 1780.

Dynamical shape of the albarelli, with the base narrowed in several degrees, a cylindrical body with domed shoulder and slightly scalloped neck. Both fronts are decorated with a cartouche, simi-lar in design to the renowned C-shaped rococo gilt metal fittings. The cartouches depict portraits two doctors in grisaille technique in the style of copperplate prints. The caption identifies one portrait as Tissot, the other as Gerard van Svieten. The cartouches are framed by flowers and leaves in a naturalistic style. The reverse is not decorated. Painted in blue, yellow, ochre and green. The glaze shows signs of minimal paint wear on the rims and the base. The Tissot albarello shows glaze defects. Foot and neck restored.

Notes:
these albarelli probably originate from a pharmacy that was decorated with portraits of celebratory contemporary doctors. Simon or also Samuel Tissot (1728 - 97) was a Swiss doctor, who practised for most of his career in Lausanne. Gerard van Swieten (1700 - 72) came from Leiden and was a medical scholar. From 1745 he was Queen Maria Theresa's personal physician.
