Majolika-Vase

Große, bauchige Vase mit schmaler Öffnung. In prächtigen Rahmen in Form von Blattkränzen und Früchten drei Bildnisse. Zwei zeigen elegante Damen und ein Bildfeld den Feldherr Oktavian. Eine Frau ist im Profil nach links zu sehen, das lockige Haar weich gebunden, das blaue Gewand mit hochstehendem, weißem Kragen zeichnet sich vor gelbem Fond ab. Die andere Frau wendet sich nach rechts und hat ein jugendliches Gesicht. Ihr Haar ist mit einem Tuch locker hoch geschlungen. Sie blickt verträumt und in sich gekehrt leicht nach unten. Das rote Gewand zeichnet sich vor dem gelben Fond ab. Der vollbärtige Feldherr ist im Profil nach links zu sehen. Er trägt einen Harnisch mit Draperie und einen hohen Helm. Er blickt leicht nach unten. Links verläuft vertikal vor dem gelben Fond das Band mit der Aufschrift "OTAVIAN". Alle Gesichter sind weiß gehöht. Zwischen den Bildmedaillons sind auf blauem Fond Trophäen-Muster mit eingestreuten Musikinstrumenten und ein Feld mit Jahreszahl zu sehen. Weiße Linien lockern die Zwischenräume auf. Bemalung in Blau, Grün, Gelb und Orange. Bruchrest. und dezente Übermalungen.

Anmerkung:
Kaiser Augustus, auch Oktavian genannt, gilt als der erste römische Kaiser. Mit den beiden Frauen-Bildnissen könnten zwei von Oktavians Frauen gemeint sein, also Clodia, Scribonia oder Livia Drusilla. Eine weitere mögliche Konstellation könnten Scribonia und Julia, das einzige Kind Oktavians sein, das er mit Scribonia hatte.

Maiolica vase

Venice, Maestro Domenico, dated '1515/55'(?).

Large, globular vase with narrow mouth. Three portraits in luxurious frames formed by foliage wreaths and fruits. Two portraits depict elegant ladies, the third the Emperor Octavian dressed as a general. One lady is portrayed in left-facing profile, her curly hair pinned up loosely, her blue dress with a white stand-up collar contrasting against a yellow ground. The other lady is turned to the right, her face youthful and her dreamy, withdrawn gaze downwards. Her hair is loosely tied up with a headscarf and her red dress stands out against a yellow ground. The general is painted with a full beard and in left-facing profile. He is wearing a suit of armour with a cape and tall helmet. He gazes slightly downwards. Vertically on the left, set against the yellow ground, a scroll reads OTAVIAN. All faces are heightened with white. Between the portrait medallions trophy ornaments and musical instruments as well as a panel with a date are painted on a blue ground. White linear ornaments break up the intervals. Painted in blue, green, yellow and orange.

Notes:
Emperor Augustus, also called Octavian, is considered the first Roman Emperor. The female portraits could depict two of Octavian's three wives Clodia, Scribonia or Livia Drusilla. Further possible identifications would be Scribonia and Julia, Octavian's only child, whom he had with Scribonia.
