Majolika-Vase mit Heiligem Sebastian

Vase mit konischem Körper, engem, zylindrischem Hals und leicht vorkragender Lippe. Die Front schmückt ein rundes Medaillon, das ein sternförmig geschwungener Rahmen umgibt. Im Bildfeld ist der Heilige Sebastian an einen Baum gebunden und von Pfeilen durchbohrt vor gelbem Fond zu sehen. Der im Halbbildnis zu sehende Heilige besitzt ein jugendliches Antlitz und blickt über eine Schulter empor, seiner Erlösung entgegen. Die übrige Wandung der Vase ziert ein blauer Fond, der dekoriert ist mit weißen Spiralen, verstreuten Blüten und großen Blattranken. Lippe und Fußring umläuft ein gelbes Band. Bemalung in Gelb, Rot, Blau, Mangan, Weiß und Grün auf weißem Fond. Kleine Abplatzungen an der Lippe.

Anmerkung:
Die Darstellung des Martyriums des Heiligen Sebastian war in der italienischen Malerei der Renaissance weit verbreitet. Als Vorbild zum Bildnis des Heiligen Sebastian auf der vorliegenden Vase könnte ein heute in der Galleria dell'Accademia in Venedig bewahrtes Gemälde von Bonifacio Veronese gedient haben, das zwischen 1510 und 1533 entstanden ist.

Maiolica vase with Saint Sebastian

Venice, 16th century.

Vase with conical body, narrow cylindrical neck and everted rim. The front painted with a medallion enclosed by a star-shaped frame. The medallion depicts a half-portrait of Saint Sebastian tied to a tree and pierced by arrows on a yellow ground. The youthful face of the Saint is turned upwards over his shoulder, ready for his salvation. The remaining surface of the vase is decorated with white spirals, interspersed flowers and large vines on a blue ground. The rim and foot ring encircled by a yellow band. Painted in yellow, red, blue, manganese, white and green on a white ground. Small chips on the rim.

Notes:
The theme of Saint Sebastian's martyrdom a common theme in Italian Renaissance painting. A painting today held by the Galleria dell'Accademia in Venice by Bonifacio Veronese, dated between 1510 and 1533 could have served as model for this vase.
