Kopie nach dem gleichnahmigen Werk von Raphael (1519/ 1520 entstanden), das sich in der Vatikanischen Pinakothek befindet. Ursprünglich geschaffen für den Altar der Kathedrale von Arbonne, beauftragt von Kardinal Giulio di Medici. Das über vier Meter hohe Original kam in die römische Kirche San Pietro in Montorio, 1797 nach Paris und ging 1816 nach dem Fall Napoleons wieder nach Italien zurück, wo es in den Bestand der Pinakothek eingegliedert wurde. Das vorliegende Gemälde ist nach Auskunft des Malstils wohl in Italien entstanden, als es sich in San Pietro in Montorio befand. (8616918)
