Großformatige, in der Kunstgeschichte in dieser Auffassung äußerst seltene Darstellung des Themas. Der Heilige von herkulischer Körpergestalt auf einem Felsen liegend, bekleidet mit einem kunstvoll drapierten, roten Velum. Der Körper nimmt die gesamte Diagonale des Bildes ein, in dynamischer Bewegung von links nach rechts, während der Kopf und Blick des Heiligen nach links gerichtet sind. In der rechten Hand hält er einen Schädel, darunter das Buch des Kirchenheiligen. Sein Attributtier, der Löwe, ist großformatig am linken Bildrand zu sehen, zum Teil vom Tuch überdeckt. Der Symbolik des Themas entsprechend hat der Künstler am rechten Bildrand eine Sanduhr eingefügt. Die Szene ist in abendliches Licht getaucht.

Dem Gemälde ist eine Expertise von Maurizio Marini, Rom, beigegeben, der das Gemälde in Zusammenhang mit der Ausstattung der Kirche Santa Maria delle Grazie in Salamanca bringt. Marini stellt Brandis Werk in die Folge von Cortona und Lanfranco und nennt zum Bildvergleich mehrere Werke des Künstlers. (700931)
