1544 Antwerpen - 1607 Amsterdam ALEXANDER DER GROSSE BEI DIOGENES IN EINER WALDLANDSCHAFT Die historische Legende, wonach König Alexander von Makedonien den Philosophen Diogenes aufsucht, der die Nichtigkeit der Weltpolitik mit den Worten kommentiert: “Störe meine Kreise nicht“ ist in eine nordische Eichenwaldlandschaft versetzt. Unter hohem, in der Krone belichtetem Eichenbaum Alexander in Rüstung stehend mit rotem Umhang in Begleitung zweier weiterer Krieger und mit Gefolge im Hintergrund. Links am Bildrand der die Ärmlichkeit vorziehende Philosoph in einer Faß-Tonne vor Büchern, mit erhobener rechter Hand, die auf das Licht hinweist, das der Philosoph durch das Herannahen Alexanders nicht verschattet wissen will. In origineller Weise am Baumstamm ein Hündchen angebracht. Der Malstil weist in die Zeit des Malers, nach dem er sich 1595 in Amsterdam niedergelassen hat. Eine genauere zeitliche Einordnung ist deshalb nicht möglich, da nur wenige Bilder von Coninxloo datiert sind. Öl/Holz. 85,5 x 68 cm. (532492)
