Großformatige Darstellung des im Werk Honthorsts mehrfach variierten Themas mit zentraler Sitzfigur des nur durch einen Lendenschurz bekleideten Christus mit um ihn herum stehenden und knienden Schergen in einer im Raum nach vorn gekippten ovalen Komposition. Das hier angebotene Gemälde muss in Zusammenhang mit einem Gemälde aus der Hand Honthorsts gesehen werden, das vom 13. November 2021-27. März 2022 im Kaarslicht Museum Gouda ausgestellt war, 197,5 x 170,5 cm misst und beim RKD in Den Haag unter Nummer 67833 verzeichnet ist. Sowohl hinsichtlich der Gesamtkomposition als auch hinsichtlich der Sitzfigur des Christus, welche in unserem Bild etwas frontaler zum Betrachter sitzend erscheint, gibt es große Ähnlichkeiten. Ein ebenfalls nicht signiertes oder datiertes Gemälde wird im J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles unter Inv. Nr 90.PA.26 geführt und im RKD Den Haag als Werk des Gerrit van Honthorst anerkannt. Die dortige Sitzfigur des Christus ist wiederum noch weiter gedreht, mit den Beinen nach links gewendet und von dort die Beleuchtung empfangend.
Anmerkung:
Papi ordnet das vorliegende Werk in das Frühwerk Honthorsts ein.

The painting on offer or sale here must be considered in connection with a painting by Honthorst exhibited between 13 November 2021 – and 27 March 2022 at Kaarslicht Museum Gouda, measuring 197.5 x 170.5 cm and listed at RKD in The Hague under no. 67833.
A painting that is also signed and dated is held at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles under inventory no. 90.PA.26 and recognized at RKD in The Hague as a work by Gerrit van Honthorst.
This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
