(1360361) (18)

CHRIST BEARING THE CROSS
Oil on canvas.
73 x 95 cm.
Biographically and stylistically, the painter is closely related to the famous painter Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, (1570/71 – 1610).
As a young man, the later painter served as a model for many of Caravaggio’s paintings, such as the paintings titled Musicians or Boy with a Basket of Fruit. As he was very close to his circle of friends, he went to Sicily with Caravaggio due to the threat of his conviction and his subsequent flight from Rome. Minniti set up his own studio in Syracuse and his work was entirely committed to his teacher’s style. He adopted chiaroscuro painting of Caravaggism and, together with Alonso Rodriguez (1578 – 1648), was probably the most important representative of this style in Sicily.
