Die in Marmor höchst qualitätsvoll gearbeitete Büste zeigt Papst Gregor VIII (Buoncampagni), auf den der sogenannte „Gregorianische Kalender“ zurückgeht. Zwischen 1715 und 1723 wurde für diesen Papst posthum das Grabmonument von Camilo Rusconi (1658-1728) unter Mitwirkung von Mellone im Petersdom in Rom errichtet. Der Mailänder war zunächst Schüler des Carlo Simonetta, dann auch Schüler Rusconis und war für die Detailarbeiten am großen Grabmal zuständig. Detailbeobachtungen lassen den Schluss zu, dass auch die hier vorliegende Büste in dieser Zeit und wohl von Mellone gearbeitet worden ist.
Das bärtige Haupt ist leicht gesenkt wiedergegeben, das Haar durch eine Mütze bedeckt, das Gesicht nachdenklich. Über die Schultern ein Chormantel mit breiten, floral im Flachrelief gearbeiteten Borten. Dazwischen eine geknotete Kette. Die Büste auf rundgedrehtem, braunem, weiß geädertem Marmorsockel mit achtseitiger Basis. A.R. (†) (13306031) (11)
