Diagonal aus dem Bildraum hinausführender unbefestigter Weg auf dem sich Pfützen gebildet haben und auf dessen höchstem Punkt zwei Spaziergänger zu sehen sind, die links wie rechts von entlaubten Bäumen flankiert werden.
Der Künstler war ein französischer Schriftsteller, Maler und Grafiker. Er studierte von 1895-1897 zunächst an der École des arts décoratifs in Paris und ab 1899 bei Fernand Cormon (1845-1924) in dessen Atelier. Der Künstler wechselte mehrfach die Stilrichtung. Er begann 1902/03 als Impressionist, setzte sich aber auch mit dem Kubismus auseinander und verarbeitete auch Elemente des Fauvismus und des Neo-Impressionismus. 1912 war er neben Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) und Juan Gris (1887-1927) Mitbegründer der Section d'Or. Er gilt als exzentrischer Künstler, der sich keinen Dogmen unterordnen wollte. Er beeinflusste maßgeblich die moderne Kunst, vor allem aber den Dadaismus.
