Apatosaurus war ein enormer Langhals-Dinosaurier oder Sauropode, der bis zu 30 Tonnen wiegen konnte und bis zu 26 Meter lang wurde. Dieser im späten Jura weit verbreitete schwerfällige Riese konnte täglich eine Tonne Pflanzen verschlingen. Er verfügte über einen langen Schwanz mit 82 Wirbeln, der eventuell der innerartlichen Kommunikation diente, indem er mit dem Schwanz einen Überschallkanal aufbaute. Versteinerte Fußspuren deuten darauf hin, dass er zumindest zeitweise innerhalb einer Herde lebte. Die ersten Fossilien wurden 1877 von Othniel Charles Marsh entdeckt. Ein Stück Geschichte, geeignet für den anspruchsvollsten Sammler und gut geeignet im modernen Interior Design. (†) (13021018)
