Eine unbefestigte Straße führt den Blick des Betrachters in den Mittelgrund. Links zeichnet sich scharf eine dunkle Baumgruppe vor dem bewölkten Himmel ab, rechts wird die Komposition durch eine im Mittelgrund befindliche Häusergruppe ausgeglichen. Wenngleich die Darstellung noch viel mehr an vorangehende Impressionisten erinnert als an die Gemälde, die uns bei Gauguin zunächst in den Sinn kommen, so wird auch schon bei der dicklinigen Einrahmung etwa der Dächer der dargestellten Gebäude klar, dass Gauguin sich seinerzeit an japanischen Holzschnitten und Glasfenstern orientierte, um zu seiner Cloisonné-Maltechnik zu gelangen, die bereits hier, vielleicht in den 1870er-Jahren, angedeutet ist und auch Bezüge zu Pissarro erkennen lässt, dessen Gemälde auch eine verstärkte Linienführung aufweisen. Gut vergleichbar, ist etwa ein Gemälde Gauguins, das 1877 datiert ist und 1998 bei Sotheby‘s, New York angeboten worden ist (Wildenstein 2002 38). Auch hier sind die Umrisse der Dächer, aber auch die Uferlinie mit starken Konturen versehen, die den späteren Stil des Autodidakten vorwegnehmen. (†) (1291935)

A dirt road leads the viewer‘s gaze into the middle ground. On the left, a group of dark trees stands out sharply against the cloudy sky; on the right, the composition is balanced by a group of houses in the middle ground. Even though the depiction is much more reminiscent of earlier Impressionists than of paintings associated with Gauguin initially, the thick-lined outlines of the roofs of the buildings make it obvious that Gauguin was inspired by Japanese woodcuts and glass windows at the time which led to his cloisonné painting technique. This is already emerging here, perhaps in the 1870s, and also reveals references to Pissarro, whose paintings also feature strong lines. A painting by Gauguin, for example, dated 1877 and offered at Sotheby‘s, New York in 1998 compares well (Wildenstein 2002 38). Here, too, the outlines of the roofs, but also the shoreline, have strong contours that anticipate the later style of the self-taught artist. (†)
