Das großformatige Gemälde zeigt den Blick auf Stadt und verschneite Anhöhen aus erhöhter Kavaliersperspektive mit Figurenstaffage im Vordergrund. Seitlich jeweils hochziehende Bäume als Repoussoir, links am gegenüberliegenden Ufer erhöht, weitere Stadtanlagen in hellerem Licht. Trotz der landschaftstypischen Wiedergabe des norditalienisch-venezianischen oder bergamaskischen Raumes dürfte es sich bei den Architekturen um eine fantasievolle Zusammenschau handeln.
Porta war Schüler des Pieter Mulier d.J. (um 1637-1701) und wurde auch „Il Bresciano“ genannt. Er wirkte im venezianischen Raum, unter anderem mit Dekorationsfresken oder Supraporte-Gemälden in venezianischen Palästen, wie etwa auch in der Villa Trissino Marzotto bei Trissino.
