Petrus in Halbfigur vor nahezu schwarzem Hintergrund, die Kopfhaltung nach rechts, der ernste Blick jedoch dem Betrachter entgegen gerichtet, sodass das scharfe Auge bewusst in der Achse der zentralen Vertikale positioniert ist. Die rechte erhobene Hand hält zwei „Himmelsschlüssel“, der linke Arm gesenkt. Die Farbigkeit von grünem Wams und einem nahezu aus sich selbst leuchtenden hellen Kardinalrot des Umhangs weist auf den Manierismus der Epoche, wie er sich nach dem Tod Raffaels 1520 bis etwa 1600 hin entwickelt hat. Die Effekte leuchtender Kleiderfarben geht etwa auf Jacopo da Carucci Pontormo (1494-1556/ 57) und Giovanni Battista di Jacopo di Guasparre Rosso (1494-1540) zurück. Gemeinsam ist diesen Malern auch das Vorbild des Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530/ 31). Im Werkstatt- und Nachfolgekreis der genannten Künstler dürfte auch der Meister des vorliegenden Bildes zu finden sein.

Half-length depiction of Saint Peter against a virtually black background. The colours of the green waistcoat and the almost luminous light cardinal red of the cloak suggest the Mannerism which developed after the death of Raphael in 1520 to ca. 1600. The effects of the luminous colours of the clothes also trace back to Jacopo da Carucci Pontormo (1494 - 1556/57) and Giovanni Battista di Jacopo di Guasparre Rosso (1494 - 1540). Andrea del Sarto (1486 - 1530/31) was also a paragon for these painters. The artist of the painting on offer for sale in this lot may also be found in the workshop or following of these artists.
