Dem Gemälde ist eine reflektographische Untersuchungsdokumentation beigegeben (Claudio Falcucci, Rom, September 2018).
Hochformatige Bildtafel, wohl eines ehemaligen Altargemäldes. Der Leichnam Christi wird von Josef von Arimathäa und Maria in einen Sarkophag niedergelegt, dahinter in Trauer, Johannes Evangelist und Maria Magdalena. Im Vordergrund, am Boden die Leidenswerkzeuge wie Dornenkrone und Kreuznägel, der Hintergrund zeigt den Eingang in eine Felsenhöhle. Der aus einem Gesteinsspalt emporsprießende Zweig darf symbolisch als das Aufsprießen der neuen Religion gedeutet werden. Das extreme Hochformat erklärt sich durch das Fehlen ehemals seitlicher Weiterführungen des Bildes.
