Dem Gemälde ist eine ausführliche Expertise von Maurizio Marini, Rom, beigegeben, mit Vermerk, dass es sich bei dem verwischten Monogramm auf dem Rotolus möglicherweise um „GR“ handeln könnte.
Das Gemälde im Hochoval zeigt den Heiligen Kirchenvater nach links an einer Tischplatte sitzend mit einem Rotulus, den er mit einer Feder beschreibt, über Bücher und einen Schädel gelegt. Davor ein achtteiliges Schriftstück, Zitat aus den Texten des Theologen. Rechts hinten rundbogiger Ausblick in eine abendliche Landschaft.
Über den Maler ist nur wenig bekannt, lediglich, dass er als Nachfolger oder Schüler von Jusepe de Ribera (1588/91-1652) gewirkt hat. Das um 1630 geschaffene Altarbild der Heiligen Katharina im Palazzo Madama, Turin, wurde dem Künstler zugeschrieben, ebenso die „Auferstehung von 1641“, die sich ehemals in Santa Maria della Sapienza in Neapel befand, heute im Palazzo della Prefettura.

A detailed expert’s report by Maurizio Marini, Rome is enclosed. It notes that the blurred monogram on the rotulus could possibly read “GR”.
