Das Gemälde illustriert den Bibeltext aus dem Lukasevangelium (16,19-31). Wie schon in der Bibel, so ist auch hier im 17. Jahrhundert die Ungleichheit zwischen leicht erworbenem Reichtum und unverdienter Armut zum Sozialthema der Zeit geworden. Demgemäß sind die Personen am Tisch in nobler, höchst aufwendig gestalteter Kleidung wiedergegeben, der Tisch mit Speisen überfüllt. Schriftstücke links am Bildrand mit Siegeln weisen auf hohe Besitztümer hin, während Lazarus rechts im Bild am Boden liegt und von einem Diener mit einem Prügelstock verjagt werden soll. Eichenplatte horizontal gewölbt.
Anmerkung:
Aufgrund Künstleraufschrift auf dem Schriftstück links im Bild „Ren... 1626“, wurde das Gemälde von Dr. Jan de Maere dem Maler Jan Remeeus zugewiesen, dem Antwerpener Maler, der unter dem Einfluss von Frans Francken d.J. (1581-1642) gearbeitet hat, über den aber bislang nur sehr wenig bekannt geworden ist. (11820224) (11)

The painting illustrates the biblical text from the St. Luke’s Gospel (16:19-31).
Notes:
Due to the artist's inscription”Ren... 1626” on a paper depicted in the left of the painting, it was attributed to the painter Jan Remeeus by Dr. Jan de Maere. The Antwerp artist was influenced by Frans Francken the Younger (1581 - 1642), however little is known about him to date.
This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
