Seinen Unterricht erhielt Pittoni zunächst bei seinem Onkel Francesco Pittoni (aktiv um 1687-um 1718), später bei Antonio Balestra (1666-1740), wurde aber auch von Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734), Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682-1754) und Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770) beeinflusst, den er zuletzt als Präsident der Venezianischen Akademie abgelöst hat. So gilt Pittoni als einer der gefragtesten Maler und Zeichner des Spätbarock und Rokoko.
Die beiden Figuren in bewegter Haltung nach links wiedergegeben. Josef im Dreiviertelbildnis, den bärtige Kopf nach links unten gewandt, hält den Jesusknaben in der linken Armbeuge, das ebenfalls in die selbe Richtung blickt. Die rechte Hand des Josef trägt das Attribut, einen Lilienstängel. Auch die Beleuchtung der Gruppe von links unten, deutet darauf hin, dass es sich hier um eine Vorstudie zu einer mehrfigurigen Gesamtdarstellung handelt, mit einem Zentrum, das links unten anzunehmen ist. Auch die flotte Pinseltechnik unterstützt diese Vermutung. (11608120) (11)
