Zuschreibung an den Künstler durch Dokumentation aus dem Vorbesitz.

Großformatiges Bildnis eines Mannes mittleren Alters mit kurzem Kinn- und Lippenbart, in dreiviertel Lebensgröße nach links im Halbbildnis sitzend vor dunklem Hintergrund. Gesicht, der weiße Halskragen sowie die Hände, durch die er eine Perlenkette gleiten lässt, sind wirkungsvoll beleuchtet, während sich das schwarze Seidengewand nur unmerklich aus dem dunklen Hintergrund abhebt. Links hinten ein kannelierter Säulenstumpf, der möglicherweise auf die humanistische Bildung des Dargestellten verweisen soll. Der scharfe, aber freundliche Blick gilt dem Betrachter. Insgesamt zeigt das Portrait allerhöchste Meisterschaft in der Wiedergabe der Psychologie in der Mimik. Das Gemälde kann als eine Wiederentdeckung für das Frühwerk des Malers gelten. Eine weitere Version, 1636 in London entstanden, wird ebenfalls van Dycks Werkstatt zugeschrieben. Kleinere Wiederholungen sind allgemein als Kopien bezeichnet worden. Die Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe zeigt ein auf Kupfer gemaltes Bildnis der selben Darstellung (29 x 17 cm), die als kleinformatige Kopie eines Gemäldes in der Dulwich Picture Gallery angesehen wird. Allerdings ist hier eine größere Ähnlichkeit mit dem vorliegenden Gemälde zu erkennen, und zwar in der Art und Weise wie die Perlenkette wiedergegeben ist. In jedem Falle würde insofern das vorliegende Gemälde die hohe Meisterschaft Hannemans zeigen.

The painter is generally considered as one of the most talented students from the workshop of Anthony van Dyck (1599 - 1641), especially in the cooperation with the workshop between 1632 and 1641. Hanneman relocated to The Hague a few years prior to van Dyck's death and soon became a sought-after portraitist in his former master's style.

Attribution to Hanneman according to documents from its previous owners.

Large-format painting of a seated middle-aged man with short chin-beard and moustache, in three-quarter life size half-portrait turned to the left against a dark background. His sharp but friendly gaze is fixed on the viewer. The portrait's psychological capturing of the man's facial features is of great mastery and it can be considered a rediscovery of the artist's early work. Another version, created in London in 1636 is also attributed to van Dyck's workshop. The Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe holds a the same portrait depiction on copper (29 x 17 cm) considered to be a small-format copy of a painting held at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. However, the Karlsruhe portrait shows a greater similarity with the portrait on offer for sale in this lot, especially when comparing the rendering of the pearl necklace. In any case, the present work would confirm Hanneman's great artistic mastery.
