Large magnificent ivory tankard
Height: 47 cm.
Diameter of foot: 22 cm.
Germany, ca. 1760, figure on cover ca. 1900.
Tankard, handle and cover figure in ivory, parcel-gilt silver mountings. A battle between Roman legionaries and barbarians is depicted in bas- and high-relief all around the tankard. A Roman Emperor in scale armour with a radiant crown and sceptre is sitting elevated on a carriage on the front. A fierce battle is depicted next to him. The sturdy handle is c-shaped and attached to the tankards with acanthus scrollwork that turns into two figures fighting with each other. The domed cover shows a figure of a kneeling Roman soldier in scale armour, with helmet, shield and sword. Overall, the tankard is an 18th century work continuing the tradition of Early Baroque and Renaissance tankards. However, the figure at the top of the cover is a later, 19th century addition.
