Das kleine hochformatige Gemälde zeigt zwei Studienkollegen von Alex Katz in engem Bildausschnitt. Wie für Katz charakteristisch, gelingt es ihm auch in dem vorliegenden Werk in den klaren nebeneinander gesetzen Farben und dem breiten Duktus die Gemütsverfassung seiner Künstlerkollegen hervorzuheben. Durch den Verzicht auf Unwesentliches und die feine Nuancierung der Ausdrücke der beiden – einer lächelt zaghaft während der andere eher kritisch blickt – erzeugt Katz eine bestimmte Stimmung, die sowohl in der Ferne wie auch in näherer Betrachtung wirkt.

The small, portrait format painting shows two of the artist's fellow students up close. As is typical for his work Katz is able to capture and emphasize the emotional state of his colleagues in bold juxtaposed colours and broad brushstrokes. By focusing on only the essential, the fine nuancing of the two’s facial expressions – one is smiling shyly the other looking seriously – Katz creates a special atmosphere that is equally powerful from a distance and up close.
