Nach einer medizinischen Ausbildung wandte sich Edoarda (gen. Dada) der Kunst zu und freundete sich mit Piero Manzoni (1933-1963) an, mit dem sie ab 1957 eine lebenslange Freundschaft verband. Ihr erster, bedeutender Werkkomplex sind die sogenannten „Volume“, die sie 1958 auf ihrer ersten Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Bossi in Mailand zeigte. Diesem Komplex gehört auch das vorliegende Werk an. 1959, dem Jahr, in dem die Arbeit entstand, trat Dada der Gruppe Azimuth bei, die Piero Manzoni, Agostino Bonalumi (1935-2013) und Enrico Castellani (geb. 1930) gegründet hatten. Diese Gruppe unterhielt Kontakte zur Zero Gruppe in Deutschland, der Group Nul in den Niederlanden und der Gruppe Motus in Frankreich.

Dadamaino’s first important group of works are the so called “Volume”, that she created from 1958 onwards and she exhibited this series in a solo exhibition at Bossi Gallery in Milan. The painting on offer in this lot is part of this series.
