STILL LIFE INSIDE A KITCHEN
Oil on canvas. Relined.
70 x 87.5 cm.
This beautiful bodegón follows in the tradition of mainstream Spanish still life painting that began with the wonderful compositions of Juan Sanchez Cotán. However the present work reveals a particular connection to the best students of this master who were active between Toledo and Madrid in the following decades, such as Felipe Ramirez, Juan van der Hamen y Leon and especially Alejandro de Loarte. Special reference should be made to Loarte's Still life with game and fruits held at the Fundacion Santamarca in Madrid (signed; 1623).
