Es gibt nur sehr wenige Informationen zu Nicholas Ficke und auch nur sehr wenige Gemälde, die sicher von ihm stammen. Wir wissen jedoch, dass er zu Beginn der fünften Dekade des 17. Jahrhunderts ein Schüler von Philips Wouwerman in Haarlem war und somit zu einer bedeutenden Schule von ortsansässigen Landschaftsmalern gehörte. Ficke malte vor allem Landschaften mit Figuren (Pferde, Soldaten und Bauern) und er war, wie auch sein Lehrer, ein hervorragender Tiermaler. Das vorliegende Gemälde weist - außer dem Einfluss von Wouwerman - deutliche Ähnlichkeiten mit den Werken der sogenannten holländischen ‚italianizzanti’ auf, besonders mit Asselyn, Boyh, Wijnants und Weenix; daher ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass dieses Gemälde lange Zeit den beiden letzteren zugeschrieben wurde. Dabei handelt es sich hier um eines der wenigen, fast sicher Ficke zuzuschreibenden Werke, besonders, wenn man es mit dem einzigen, von allen Experten einstimmig von ihm stammenden Gemälde in der John G. Johnson Collection - Museum of Art, Philadelphia, vergleicht.

Apart from Wouwerman’s influence, the present painting shows significant similarities with works by the so-called Dutch “Italianizzanti”, especially artists such as Asselyn, Both, Wijnants and Weenix. This is one of the few works that can almost certainly be attributed to Ficke, particularly when comparing it with the only work that all experts unanimously agree to be by the artist’s hand, which is held held in the John G. Johnson collection at the Museum of Art, Philadelphia.
